Approaches to Improve Your Eye Health

At the office of Optical Outlets , we utilize state-of-the-art approaches to improve your eye health and vision. Your ocular health is an important component of your overall health and well-being. When you visit our optometry office, you can rest assured that we are well equipped to meet your full range of needs. Conditions such as diabetes can increase your risk of vision loss, but with comprehensive eye examinations, we can diagnose diabetic retinopathy early on and recommend an appropriate course of treatment.

Diabetic retinopathy refers to a type of vision loss in people diagnosed with diabetes; this condition occurs when blood sugar levels rise and damage the retinal blood vessels. The onset of this condition may not present with any symptoms at first, which is why periodic eye examinations are of the utmost importance. As the condition progresses, your vision may become blurry or large floaters may appear in your field of vision. When you visit our optometry office, we will thoroughly examine the anatomy of the retina using a special instrument called an ophthalmoscope. If our optometrist discovers that diabetic retinopathy is present, we will perform further testing to determine the extent of it. Prevention is key when it comes to this condition, and it is important to talk to your primary care doctor about how to best manage blood sugar levels to keep your eyes healthy. Throughout your course of care, our team of professionals keeps you informed and at ease, addressing any questions you may have regarding treatment. We keep pace with the most advanced technology and treatment methods to help you enjoy optimal eye health and vision.

Protection Against Vision Loss

Conditions affecting your overall bodily health and wellbeing can also take a toll on your eye health and vision. Diabetes is a serious disease that can damage multiple organ systems, including your eyes. When not properly controlled, diabetes increases your risk for developing harmful eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts. At the office of Optical Outlets we provide comprehensive care to help people living with diabetes prevent these problems and protect against vision loss. We focus on early detection, and providing the appropriate guidance as well as care to help safeguard your eyesight.

Diabetes occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin or becomes resistant to insulin, which causes blood sugar levels to become elevated. Regulating insulin levels is of the utmost importance for managing diabetes. Whether you have Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disorder acquired at birth, or Type 2 diabetes, which develops later in life, managing your blood sugar levels through diet, exercise and taking insulin is key. Chronically high blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels in the eye over time, causing diabetic retinopathy. The retina is the part of the eye that transmits visual information to the brain, and when it becomes damaged, you may experience dark spots floating in your field of vision, blurred vision and eye pain. Generally the onset of symptoms does not occur until the disease has progressed. People who have diabetes are also a greater risk for developing cataracts and glaucoma. Fortunately, with regularly scheduled eye examinations, we can detect these conditions early in their onset and provide ongoing care to help protect your vision and monitor the health of your eyes.

A Cure for Your Dry Eye

Do you suffer from dry eye? If so, you are like millions of others who experience the eye irritation, burning, stinging, or blurry vision associated with this disorder. At the office of Optical Outlets, we provide compassionate, personalized eye care to treat a wide range of conditions. Although there may not be a cure for your dry eye, there are many treatment options available to relieve its symptoms. As a first step in care, we’ll evaluate your case and create an individualized treatment plan to meet your needs.

Ordinarily, each time you close your eyes or blink, a layer of moisture spreads across your cornea, washing away debris and lubricating your eyes. With dry eye, the tears that are meant to moisturize, clean and protect your eyes, are either low in quality, or evaporate, leaving your eyes un-replenished, and irritated. This can be caused by aging, environmental factors, certain medications, long-term contact lens wear, hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases (such as Sjögren’s Syndrome), or a variety of contributing factors. Our optometrist can examine your eyes and help determine the best treatments to keep moisture in your eyes. Certain lifestyle and environmental factors can be changed, providing relief in some cases. For instance, quitting smoking or avoiding cigarette smoke can make a big difference in the dryness of your eyes. Reducing the amount of air that blows into your eyes, such as when you’re driving or drying your hair. Even deciding to wear glasses or shades on days when it’s windy outside can help provide relief. It’s also important to take breaks from looking at a computer screen. Long periods of time spent staring at a screen can keep your eyes from blinking as much as they should, resulting in the depletion of moisture and protective tears that lubricate your eyes.

Development of Chronic Dry Eye

Chronic dry eye is a common condition that not only causes persistent discomfort, but it can also compromise your vision. With chronic dry eye, you do not have enough quality tears to lubricate, nourish and protect your eyes. At the office of Optical Outlets we’ll perform a comprehensive examination as well as discuss your symptoms and review your medical history to diagnose this condition and recommend an appropriate course of care.

Dry eye can present with a number of unpleasant symptoms; including an itchy, burning sensation, blurred vision, eye fatigue or excessive tearing. There are a number of factors which can contribute to dry eye; certain medications, medical conditions and environmental causes can all play a role. The aging also contributes to the development of dry eye, as the amount of tears we produce declines as we get older. Additionally, recent studies show that spending long periods of time looking at a digital screen can be associated with the development of dry eye. It’s wise for computer users and video game afficionados to take breaks and rest their eyes periodically.

Although dry eye rarely causes complications, advanced cases might cause damage to the front surface of the eye. As part of your eye exam, we’ll examine your eyelids, evaluate your blink dynamics and inspect your cornea. We’ll also perform diagnostic tests to evaluate the quantity and quality of your tears. Fortunately, there are a number of effective treatment options to alleviate the symptoms of dry eye. Artificial tears in the form of eye drops and ointments can help minimize dryness and keep your eyes healthy. Anti-inflammatory eyedrops or medication may be recommended as well as drops that increase tear production. In some cases, a tear duct procedure may be suggested to help conserve natural tears and prevent them from draining away.

Symptoms of Dry Eyes

Healthy eyes require adequate lubrication, protection and nourishment from a thin layer of tears at all times. When not enough tears are present to cover the eye, a condition called dry eyes may develop. This condition can compromise the quality of vision as well as interfere with your daily activities. At the office of Optical Outlets, we’ll determine if you’re affected by this condition and recommend an appropriate course of care to restore visual comfort and function.

Dry eyes can occur for a number of reasons; either the eye fails to produce enough tears, the quality of tears is poor or the tears evaporate too quickly. This can be attributed to factors such as aging, the use of certain medications, medical conditions like diabetes and arthritis, and conditions that make it difficult to blink, such as Bell’s palsy. Dry eyes can also occur if you spend too long looking at a computer or microscope, as well as exposure to windy, smoky environments.

If you’re experiencing stinging, burning or scratchy eyes, notice there is mucus surrounding your eyes, or you’re experience intermittent tearing, be sure to discuss these symptoms with our office. Diagnosed cases of dry eye are sometimes addressed with artificial tears in the form of eye drops and ointments to help alleviate discomfort and keep the eyes moist and healthy. Anti-inflammatory medications may also be recommended for some patients. It’s also helpful to wear sunglasses or protective goggles to help reduce exposure to wind and sun, which can dry your eyes. By using a humidifier if you live in a dry climate, you can retain moisture in your living space to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes.

Designer Frames 34761

Our Optical Outlets practice provides diagnosis and vision corrections for individuals with all forms of refractory problems, which many people have in the form of nearsightedness (myopia). However, as many of us age we can develop a problem with seeing objects that are close clearly (presbyopia), corrective lenses set in designer frames 34761 fix both these problems.

For patients that use eyeglasses for myopia the emergence of presbyopia at about age 40 or so can complicate the challenge of seeing at all distances. In order to focus on objects that are distant and then those that are close the viewer would have to switch eyeglasses quite often. Our optical practice alleviates this problem by prescribing and then fabricating eyeglasses that feature multifocal lenses; lenses that contain more than one focal power to facilitate clear vision at more than one distance. Bifocals contain two different focal powers, with the distance power on the top and the close vision focal power underneath in one of our designer frames 34761. The bottom portion of the lens can be configured in several different shapes with the straight complete bottom portion of the lens being the most popular type of lens. The patient looks straight through the lens to see far away objects and looks down slightly to see close objects or read. Trifocals have three focusing powers in the lens; the middle portion of the lens is for intermediate objects such as those at arms length, computer work is an example of intermediate vision.

Many people can benefit from bifocals or trifocals but do not like the look of the lines that separate the different lens components. Our optical shop also provides progressive eyeglass lenses, which feature the bi- or trifocal lenses without any lines instead each segment of the lens blends seamlessly into one another with one of our designer frames 34761. If your vision has changed and you are beginning to have trouble seeing close objects call our office for an appointment and start to see everything clearly again.
